Video #2: 60 Seconds on Image Composition
The best image is captured by correctly combining background, lighting and framing.

Background
Be aware of the background. A bright background or a light source behind the subject will cause back lighting or a shadow. Generally, you want a dark, solid background to provide a nice contrast with the subject.

Framing
Get close to the subject and capture as much detail as possible. Fill the view finder with the subject. Often the best image is not head on, but from an angle to allow view of two sides of the subject.

Lighting
Make sure your subject is well lit. If there is not enough light, you may have to adjust the exposure on the camera or use additional lighting. A simple work light is a good choice for additional directional lighting. The general rule is to have the light source behind or off to the side of the camera.

Review

  • Use a dark, solid background
  • Subject should be well lit, adjust camera exposure or use extra lights
  • Light source should be behind or next to the camera
  • Shoot from an angle, not head on
  • Get close, show detail and fill screen with subject
